inventory number: w0093

72 x 88 cm
Raffael, the Italian artist of High Renaissance, created this pyramid-shaped group of figures from 1505 to 1506. By copying this picture Friedrich Neubauer gave proof of his technical skills already in his youth. The facial expression of the Madonna, Jesus and John the Baptist as a boy give evidence of great empathy. Jesus as a boy is holding a barely visible goldfinch in his left hand, a symbol of the Passion of Christ. The back_ground remains uncompleted. The picture shows a slight damage in the right upper third of the background which may be due to its evacuation during the war.
