Franken (“Franconia”) - that is what the area situated north of the Danube is called, whose biggest city is the old imperial city of Nuremberg. The numerous centuries-old little towns and villages of the region still consist mainly of houses built in traditional timber framed work. The steep roofs are typical for Franconia. The numerous churches, most of them dating back to the Gothic period, with their valuable altars created by outstanding artists are a most valuable cultural asset. The people are considered to be taciturn, but friendly and helpful in relation to foreign visitors.
